Learning time: Astrological dictionary

Here are some of the important points in astrology and their meanings, simplified.

• Air : one of the four elements, air symbolizes alertness, clarity of perception, intelligence and spontaneous actions.
• Angle: Cusp of the first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses: either ened of the horizon meridian
• The Arc of Intimacy: Houses five, six, seven and eight, whose planets and signs represent lessons in falling in love and play (5), responsibility (6) , trust and commitment (7) and sexual and psychological intimacy and passion (8).
• Ascendant: The eastern horizon or the sign rising there; the first house as a whole
• Ascedantalization: An intraspect made by the Ascendant of one chart to any point on another chart, symbolizing the process of stylization or caricaturazation of the affected point.
• Aspect: One of several geometrical angles formed between planets or between planets and angles.
• Aspect grid: Schematic graph representing all the aspects of a perticular birth or astrological chart
• Astrological Nadir: see Nadir
• Birthchart: A map of the heavens seen at the date and time of a person’s birth, from the viewpoint of his or her birthplace.
• Cardinal: One of the three modes of the signs. Active, initiatory, and determinative, the cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.
• Composite chart: A synthetic chart that symbolizes the spirit of a particular human partnership, based on the midpoints of the individual birthcharts.
• Conjunction: An aspect characterized by a 0-degree separation between two planets, symbolizing the process of fusion or collision. See Orb
• Culture Shock: A type of composite chart that is very different from either person’s birthchart, indicating that they both need to make major adjustments to stay in the relationship.
• Cusp: The beginning of a house. Actually a fuzzy zone extending about a degree and a half on either side of the precise beginning of a house.
• Democracy: A type of composite chart that contains elements reminiscent of both partners, indicating it should be easy for each to have a voice in the union.
• Descendant: The Western horizon, or the sign on it; the seventh house as a whole
• Direct: Normal motion of a planet forward though the signs. See Retrograde; Stationary.
• Earth: One of the four elements; earth symbolizes patience, practicality, realism, and stability.
• Ecliptic: The apparent path of the Sun, Moon, and planets against the stars; the zodiac.
• Element: Fire, Earth, Air or Water. One of the four fundamental psychic processes or orientations of consciousness.
• Ephemeris: A book listing the positions of the planets each day at a certain time over a long period.
• Feudal System: A type of composite chart that resembles one partner’s chart more than the other’s, indicating that circumstances seem to grant more “power” to the person whose chart the composite chart resembles.
• Fire: One of the four elements, fire symbolizes the development of will.
• Fixed: One of the three modes of signs. Stability, strength and purpose, stubborness. The fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius.
• Glyph: Any of the written symbols in astrology used as a kind of shorthand.
• Hemisphere: There are four hemispheres in any birthchart: above and below the local horizon and east and west of the meridian.
• Horizon: The horizontal axis of a birthchart connecting the Ascendant and the Descendant.
• House: Any of the twelve divisions of the space above or below the local horizon; the basic “arenas” or “terrains” of life that the mind enters and experiences.
• Intraspect: An aspect made by a planet or point in one person’s birthchart to a planet or point in another person’s birthchart.
• Jovialization: An intraspect made by one person’s Jupiter to any point on another’s birthchart, symbolizing the uplifting and expansion or the flattering and overextension of the affected point.
• Lunarization: An intraspect made by one person’s Moon to any point on another person’s chart, symbolizing the process of sensitizing and inspiring or of emotionally upsetting the affected point
• Martialization: An intraspect made by one person’s Mars to any point on another’s chart. Martialization emboldens, arouses, frightens, or enrages the affected point.
• Mercurialization: An intraspect formed by the Mercury of one person to any point on another person’s chart, symbolizing the intellectual stimulation or confusion of the affected point.
• Meridian: The vertical axis of the birthchart; the line connecting the Midheaven and the Nadir.
• Midheaven: The highest zodiacal point above the horizon; the approximate position of the sun at noon; the cusp of the tenth house; the tenth house as a whole.
• Minor aspects: Aspects other than conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition.
• Minute of Arc: One sixtieth of a degree, often simply called a minute.
• Mode: One of the three expressions of sign energy: cardinal, fixed, and mutable.
• Mutable: One of the three modes of signs. Changable, responsive, flowing, the mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces.
• Nadir: The Zodiacal point farthest below the local horizon: the approximate position of the sun at midnight; the cusp of the fourth house or the fourth house as a whole.
• Neptunification: An intraspect made by the Neptune of one person to any point on another’s chart, symbolizing the inspiration and enchantment, or the dissipation and deception, of the affected point.
• Opposition: An aspect characterized by a 180-degree separation between two planets, symbolizing the process of polarization or tension. See Orb
• Orb: The limits of tolerance within which an aspect is considered functional. Variable and subjective, but usually taken to be about seven degrees.
• Planet: Any celestial body that moves through the zodiac in a predictable way. Astrologically, tthe term includes the Sun and Moon.
• Plutonification: An intraspect made by one person’s Pluto to any point on another’s chart, symbolizing the penetration and transpersonalization or the curruption and domination of the affected point.
• Primal Triad: The Sun, Moon and Ascendant taken together as “skeleton” of the individuality.
• Progressions: Any of a number of synthetic predictive techniques in which planets are made to move through the birthchart in varying rates.
• Retrograde: Planetary condition characterized by an apparent “backward” motion through the sky. See Direct
• Rulership: A particularly strong affinity between a planet and a sign, allowing clear expression of both.
• Saturnization: An intraspect formed by one person’s Saturn to any point on another’s birthchart, symbolizing the crystallization and confrontation, or frustration and control, of the affected point.
• Sextile: An aspect characterized by a 60-degree separation between two planets, symbolizing the process of excitation. See Orb
• Sideral time: An astronomically precise time used in setting up birthcharts.
• Sign: One of the twelve basic divisions of the zodiac; a phase in the orbital relationship of the earth and the Sun; a fundamental psychological process.
• Singleton: Any planet placed alone in a hemisphere.
• Solarization: An intraspect made by one person’s Sun to any point on another person’s chart, symbolizing the process of revitalization or domination of the affected point.
• Solstice: The day of the year when the night is longest (winter solstice) or shortest (summer solstice).
• Square: An aspect characterized by a separation of 90 degrees between two planets, symbolizing the process of friction. See Orb.
• Station: A planet is said to be “making a station” when it is stationary.
• Stationary: A planet is stationary when it appears to be standing motionless relative to the zodiac, about to turn retrograde or direct.
• Stationary direct: Stationary and about to turn direct
• Stationary retrograde: Stationary and about to turn retrograde.
• Stelium: Any clustering of three or more planets in a single sign or house
• Synastry: The astrology of human relationships. Also an astrological counselling session during which the principles of synastry are used.
• Table of Houses: A book based on complex calculations in spherical trigonometry that shows location of house cusps at various sideral times and latitudes.
• Transits: The actual, psysical motion of the planets through the sky and therefore around the trigger points of the birthchart.
• Transpose: To place, artificially, the planets of one person in the houses to another.
• Transpositional chart:  A birthchart with the transposed planets of another person drawn into or outside the first person’s houses.
• Trine: An aspect characterized by a separation of 120 degrees between two planets, symbolizing the process of harmonization. See Orb
• Uranization: An aspect characterized by one person’s Uranus to any point on another’s chart, symbolizing the individualization or disruption of the affected point.
• Venusification: An intraspect made by one person’s Venus to any point on another person’s chart, symbolizing the increased attractivness or manipulation of the affected point.
• Water: One of the four elements; water symbolizes subjectivity, emotion, depth and the ability to love
• Zodiac: The apparent path of the Sun, Moon and planets around the earth, the twelve signs.
