This mysteriously looking dark blue stone reflecting golden specks inside, carrying a name of the well known philosopher’s stone is a deep blue metamorphic rock used as a semi-precious stone that has been prized and well-known since antiquity for it’s intense color.

Lapis lazuli was one of the most important trading material in the past and highly valued. Some of the earliest mines of this stone date as early as the 7th century BC, where it was mined in the Sar-isang mines, and of course famous Tutankhamun mask was made from fair share of lapis lazuli stones.

Its name could literally mean “blue stone” lapis-stone (latin). All the words azure (English), azur (French), azzuro (Italian), lazur (Polish), azura and azuriu (Roman), azul (Portugese, Spanish), azur (Hungarian) come from the name and color of lapis lazuli.

Because of it’s quality lapis takes an excellent polish and it has been widely used for ornamental purposes and made into jewelry, carvings, boxes, mosaics, ornaments, small statues, vases, and also it’s great metaphysical properties, recognized by ancient civilizations.

It’s usage as a pigment in painting known as ultramarine was one of the most important. Stone was crushed to make pigments for oil painting, but it ended in the 19th century when a chemically identical synthetic variety became available.

This blue stone was originally mined in Afghanistan and exported to the Mediterranean world and South Asia since the Neolithic age. Of course it was also widely used in Mesopotamia by the Akkadians, Assyrians and Babylonians for seals and jewelry. this stone was also mentioned in the Mesopotamian poem of the Epic of Gilgamesh (17-18th century BC), one of the oldest known work of literature, where it was mentioned several times.

In the ancient Egypt Lapis lazuli was a favorite stone for amulets and ornaments such as scarabs. Lapis jewelry has been found of excavations of the Predynastic site Naqada (3300-3100 BC). Powdered form for Lapis lazuli was used as eyeshadow by Cleopatra.

In the late classical times and as late as the Middle ages, lapis lazuli was often called sapphire, though it had little to do with the stone today known as sapphire.

There are also many references to sapphire in the Old testament, but most scholars agree that, since sapphire was not known before the Roman empire, they most likely are references to lapis lazuli.

As they saw the God of Israel, and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone. – Exodus 24:10

Traditionally this stone kept a meaning connected to symbol of royalty, honor, gods and power, universal symbol of wisdom and truth. It is said that this is a great stone for executives, journalists and psychologists.
